German composer and violist Volker David Kirchner has passed away - aged 77

German composer and violist Volker David Kirchner has passed away - aged 77.

Throughout his career, Volker composed 16 operas - and was awarded a number of prizes including the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate Composers Prize, Rhineland-Palatinate Arts Award and the City of Mainz Gutenberg Medal.

Prior to moving his focus to composer, he served as a violist with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and the Kehr Trio - and was a founding member of the Ensemble 70.
