Germany's Deutsche Oper Berlin Reintroduces Facemask Requirement

The opera house renews the protocol following Germany’s recent surge in COVID-19 cases

In accordance with previous regulations, it is once again compulsory for visitors of the Deutsche Oper Berlin to adhere to COVID-safe guidelines.

“The current pandemic development has prompted us to reintroduce the obligation to wear a medical or FFP2 mask at all times, even during performances, for your own protection and that of all guests,” the opera company wrote on their website. “Children up to the age of six are exempt from the mask requirement.”

Even those with a doctor’s approval confirming an exemption from the mask requirement will be barred from attending performances and events. All venue employees, except for stage personnel, will also need to wear a facemask.

The State of Berlin’s Infection Protection Measures Ordinance passed on November 11, 2021. The stated “2G regulation” — whereby patrons must be fully vaccinated against or previously recovered from COVID-19 — will apply at Deutsche Oper Berlin starting from November 15, 2021.

Included in the regulation is a temperature screening conducted at the concert venue. Audience members must also present evidence of full vaccination or COVID-19 recovery. Those under the age of 18 and people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons will be exempt from the 2G regulation and must present a negative test result.

Deutsche Oper Berlin’s 2021-22 season will see performances including Bizet’s “Carmen,” Wagner’s Ring Cycle, and Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Ticket sales have begun for all performances until January 31, 2022. For concerts after that date, advance bookings begin on November 18, 2021.
