President of the Brooklyn Academy of Music Steps Down
Gina Duncan's contract was not renewed at the close of her three-year term
The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) recently announced that its President, Gina Duncan, will stand down at the end of her three-year contract — after the academy declined to renew it.
Duncan had previously been its vice president of film and strategic programming. The institution has a history of long, stable presidencies, such as the 16-year term of Karen Brooks Hopkins.
BAM has been battling with its finances since the pandemic — and in 2023 announced that it would cut twenty-six of its staffing positions. In 2021, the organization resorted to spending a portion of its $100 million endowment on operating costs.
In a statement, BAM did not give a reason for Duncan's departure, but did praise her work with the organization during her tenure.
"Gina’s efforts have enhanced BAM’s promise and fortified the institution’s role as a premier home for both established and emerging artists and a place welcoming to all audiences," said Diane L. Max, the chairwoman of the board. "She leaves BAM well-positioned and poised for success for years to come."
"There is no place quite like BAM, and it’s been an incredible honor to serve as president during such a pivotal moment for our industry," Duncan said.
