Hilary Hahn Performs in Benefit Concert for Haiti
To support the Haitian Orchestra Institute, the American violinist will perform in Utah's Park City on September 14, 2021
The Haitian Orchestra Institute (HOI), is an educational outreach program that enables musicians of the Utah Symphony to travel to Haiti and teach over 100 Haitian musicians during an intensive week of workshops.
Hahn will be performing alongside musicians of the Utah Symphony in an intimate salon concert, titled “One Enchanted Evening,” to be held at the Goldener Hirsch Residences in Park City.
Since 2017, Utah Symphony members and music director Thierry Fischer have traveled to Haiti for the program, but due to the political unrest of 2019 and the current pandemic, the program is looking to resume in 2022.
All proceeds from the concert will help participating students cover the cost of HOI’s Spring 2022 program and in supporting the ongoing efforts of the organization.
Students in the program share a dream that HOI can one day lead to Haiti’s first national orchestra. “Music breaks barriers,” said Getro Joseph, a former student. “It gives life — hope and life.”
“It’s rare to get to see someone like Hilary Hahn perform so up-close,” said John Eckstein, co-founder of HOI and cellist of the Utah Symphony. “She’s a superstar in our field. Normally, she’d be performing for audiences of 3,000, not a few hundred.”
