Houston Symphony — Assistant Conductor
The successful candidate will assist and cover for Juraj Valčuha on the entire season's concerts
The Houston Symphony is currently seeking a new Assistant Conductor. Based in Houston, Texas, the orchestra was founded in 1913 and is currently conducted by Juraj Valčuha.
The successful candidate will be required to serve as a cover conductor for the orchestra's 18-week season, as well as its annual performance of Handel's Messiah and its summer concerts and tours. The candidate will prepare all scores and provide feedback to the Music Director, advising on issues such as balance, intonation, and ensemble.
In addition, the Assistant Conductor will get to learn directly from the Music Director, taking note of how they run the rehearsals and receiving his instruction on specific repertoire.
The successful candidate will also be involved with a variety of the orchestra's outreach programs, including the Community and Family Concerts, the Pops programs, and the orchestra's various Education programs. They will gain experience with orchestral planning and fundraising, as well as public speaking opportunities.
Applicants should preferably hold a Master's degree in conducting and must have experience conducting a professional orchestra.
Auditions will take place in Houston's Jones Hall on May 9, 2023. Applications should be received by March 10, 2023.
