Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Announces Next Chief Conductor
As of Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s (HRSO) 2022-23 concert season, Italian conductor Riccardo Frizza will join the president-conductor Tamás Vásáry and permanent conductor János Kovács of the Hungarian Radio Art Groups team.
Frizza has worked with the ensemble before, and the HRSO has a great outlook on its continued partnership with Frizza.
For the upcoming season, Frizza will conduct the HRSO and Choir for four occasions across two extended periods. The ensemble is looking to increase his involvement, including in international tours.
As music director of the Bergamo Donizetti Opera Festival since 2017, Frizza has performed internationally in venues such as Metropolitan Opera House, La Scala, and Bayerische Staatsoper.
In 2020, he won Best Conductor at the International Opera Awards and was awarded by Ópera XXI in 2021 as best Musical Director. He has an ample discography with labels such as Decca, Sony, Dynamic, and Naxos.
“To be the new Chief Conductor of the HRSO and Choir is first of all a great honor for me: I highly admire the Hungarian musicians and this country’s incredible cultural heritage,” Frizza stated in the press release.
“To be in Budapest is always a great joy for me. The first time I came here and worked with this orchestra was in 2010 and since then, the deep relationship and understanding on the musical level I felt on the first day never changed,” he continued.
“I am very happy finally to have this opportunity to work together on a regular basis, to develop and further strengthen our artistic path,” he added. “I can see the great potential of this orchestra and I’m confident that it can be listed among the best and most prestigious European orchestras of today.”
