International Society of Bassists Names 2023 Jane Little Scholarship Winner
Maggie Carter received a $10,000 grant with the scholarship, which is awarded to a female double bassist pursuing college studies
Supported by an anonymous donor, the annual Jane Little Scholarship of the International Society of Bassists (ISB) is awarded to a female double bass major entering college as a freshman.
As the 2023 winner, Maggie Carter will receive $10,000 to support her studies at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, where she was recently accepted.
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Carter’s mentors included Jordan Anderson, Braizahn Jones, and Nina DeCesare. She has attended the Tanglewood Institute and Interlochen Arts Camp and is a young artist in residence of All Classical Portland.
Carter has been the winner of first prize in the junior divisions of the 2020 Oregon Mozart Players Young Soloist Competition and the 2021 Oregon ASTA Solo Competition, plus the winner of the 2022 Portland Youth Philharmonic Concerto Competition.
Additionally, she is the principal bassist of the Portland Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and recently performed solo with the Oregon Symphony in six community concerts.
The Jane Little Scholarship is named for Jane Little, who was a former member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. With an over 70-year performing career, Little was one of the world’s longest-serving professional orchestral musicians.
“The panel would like to congratulate all applicants — it was a plethora of talent!” said chair of the 2023 ISB Jane Little Scholarship selection committee, Tom Knific.
