Italy's Trio Chagall Announces New Name
Inspired by the verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti, the ensemble will now be known as Trio Concept
Comprising players Edoardo Grieco (violin), Francesco Massimino (cello), and Lorenzo Nguyen (piano), Trio Chagall recently announced that it would update its name to Trio Concept, in order to better reflect the ensemble's aesthetic goals.
Of late, the group has achieved substantial success. They were named as a YCAT Artist, won first prize at the Schoenfeld International String Competition, were named as ECHO Rising Stars for the 2025/26 season, and received the Prix Yves Paternot at the 31st Verbier Festival. They were also the first Italian ensemble to receive each of these distinctions.
The Trio recently made their Taipei debut with Beethoven's Triple Concerto and has collaborated with artists such as Bruno Giuranna, Mathieu Herzog, and Giampaolo Pretto.
The group's original name was chosen when the players were just thirteen years old, and the players felt that it did not adequately characterize the qualities they most value in their own music-making.
The players say that the name Trio Content is inspired by Michelangelo Buonarroti's verses, which reflect the trio's artistic commitment to search for full harmony between form and content.
"Since the beginning of our journey, we have approached making music together with enthusiasm, passion and a pinch of recklessness," the ensemble said. "More than ten years ago, when we were just thirteen years old, we chose the name Trio Chagall to accompany us on this journey."
"Despite the strong emotional bond to the old name of our trio, we realized that we were bound by aesthetic canons that did not reflect us completely. Many things around us have changed, but not our concept of the trio as the beating heart of our musical life and a constant source of inspiration that renews our relationship daily. Hence the idea of changing our name to Trio Concept, a decision that reflects our vision and deep connection to the idea of the trio, which has always guided our way of making music."
