Ivors Classical Awards Announces 2023 Nominees
The award celebrates creative excellence in composition for contemporary classical and sound art
Previously known as The Ivors Composer Awards, this is the first year that The Ivors Classical Awards celebrates the best new classical music and sound art by British, Irish, or UK resident composers.
After being relaunched by the Ivors Academy this summer, the Ivors Classical Awards and its Ivor Novello Awards represent peer recognition within multiple categories. The awards are judged by 40 renowned composers from across the Academy’s membership. Each judge nominates between three and five works for each category that were submitted anonymously.
34 composers have been nominated for an Ivor Novello Award as part of The Ivors Classical Awards 2023. For a full list of nominees, click here.
11 Ivor Novello Awards will be presented to eight category winners on November 14 at BFI Southbank in London.
Close to half of the shortlist are first-time nominees, including Jasdeep Singh Degun, Simon Knighton, Angela Elizabeth Slater, and Dobrinka Tabakov.
Composers Brett Dean, Brian Irvine, and Hannah Kendall have each received two nominations.
In addition, three Gift of the Academy award winners will be granted, one of which has already gone to John Rutter CBE. He will also be awarded the prestigious Academy Fellowship, which is the highest honor bestowed by The Ivors Academy.
