Cleveland Orchestra Appoints Assistant Principal Second Violin
Jason Yu comes to the ensemble from a position in the New York Philharmonic
The Cleveland Orchestra (TCO) recently announced that violinist Jason Yu has been appointed as the ensemble's new Assistant Principal Second Violin. Yu comes to the role from a position in the New York Philharmonic, and will hold the James and Donna Reid Chair from January 8, 2024.
Hailing originally from Seoul, South Korea, Yu studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy, where he was valedictorian, winner of the concerto competition, and concertmaster of the orchestra. He then went on to The Juilliard School, where Naoko Tanaka and Joseph Lin were his teachers.
Yu served as concertmaster in both the Juilliard Orchestra and the Verbier Festival Orchestra. In addition, he has participated in the Artosphere Festival Orchestra, Sarasota Music Festival, and the Encore School for Strings.
Following a two-year fellowship at the New World Symphony, Yu joined the New York Philharmonic in 2015 and has played there ever since.
Bass trombonist Luke Sieve has also recently been appointed to The Cleveland Orchestra.
"When I first heard The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center as a student in 2005, it left an
indelible impression on me," Yu said. "I’m so grateful I get to start this new chapter as a member of The Cleveland
Orchestra and create lasting memories with my fellow colleagues."
