American conductor Jonathan Sternberg has passed away - aged 98
American conductor Jonathan Sternberg has passed away - aged 98.
A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, he served conducting positions with the Shanghai Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Halifax Symphony, Royal Flemish Opera, Harkness Ballet and the Atlanta Opera - and held long term teaching positions on faculty at the Eastman School of Music and Temple University.
Maestro Sternberg will be remembered for his key role in introducing American music to European audiences - notably championing the works of Leonard Bernstein, Charles Ives, Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland.
