Kaelan Decman Appointed Associate Principal Bass at the LA Philharmonic
The Los Angeles native comes to the role from a position at the San Diego Symphony
Bassist Kaelan Decman was formerly a tutti bass player in the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. He returns home to Los Angeles for his new role as Associate Principal Bass at the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Decman studied at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music with Bruce Bransby for his undergraduate degree and then attended the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California for his graduate studies. Since graduating, he has appeared with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra.
He has played in summer music festivals as a fellow, including the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. He held the Zarin Mehta Fellowship at the Music Academy of the West, which saw him perform with the New York Philharmonic.
Three other new appointments join Decman in other sections of the orchestra.
"Please join us in welcoming the newest members of the LA Phil!" the ensemble wrote on social media.
"[They are] Marc Lachat, principal oboe; Kaelan Decman, associate principal bass; David Riccobono, assistant principal timpani/section percussion; and James Mason Soria, tuba. We're thrilled to have you aboard."
