New York's Kaufman Music Center Names Artists-in-Residence for 2023/24

Composer Angélica Negrón, tenor and music educator Nicholas Phan, and the self-conducted orchestra A Far Cry will participate in the program

New York City's Kaufman Music Center (KMC)+ recently named the three artists/ensembles who will participate in its Artist-in-Residence program for the 2023/24 season. They are the composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón, the tenor and music educator Nicholas Phan, and the self-conducted orchestra A Far Cry.

The Artist-in-Residence program selects artists who are at the cutting edge of groundbreaking and multidisciplinary work, as well as those who give back to their communities and are committed to nurturing the next generation of artists.

As part of these twin focuses, the artists will create imaginative performance experiences, give masterclasses, and work with students from across the KMC's programs.

A Far Cry will give a concert featuring works by Ernst Bloch, Jung Woon Wei (NYC Premiere), and Errollyn Wallen, as well as running an interactive Listening Lab concert and giving a masterclass with the KMC's Special Music School orchestra.

Angélica Negrón will record her first solo album with KMC's Face the Music students, will run an instrument-building workshop at KMC's Special Music School, and will give a concert with Sophie Parker and Face the Music.

Finally, Nicholas Phan will give a public masterclass with KMC's vocal students, will give a "What Makes It Great?" recital, and will appear in concert with the Jasper String Quartet & pianist Myra Huang — including the premiere of a new work by Vivian Fung on the topic of climate change.

"I’m thrilled to join Kaufman Music Center as an Artist-in-Residence and explore new possibilities of creating music from unexpected sources together with their students and audiences," said Angélica Negrón.

"I’m particularly excited about being part of a community that, by design, allows for educational activities and professional experiences to fluidly coexist in a way in which learning, exploring, making and sharing are beautifully intertwined."
