Lawrence University Conservatory of Music Appoints New Dean
Violist Christopher Jenkins will succeed Brian Pertl
The Conservatory of Music at Lawrence University, in Wisconsin, has announced that violist Christopher Jenkins will serve as its next Dean. He will have full oversight of the school's degree programs and will make a significant contribution to the future of the department.
Previously, Jenkins served as Associate Dean for Academic Support at Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he spent a decade expanding the music curriculum and providing a wealth of support to students. During this time, he also completed two doctoral qualifications: a Doctor of Musical Arts in viola performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Ph.D. in musicology from Case Western Reserve University.
As a violist, he has appeared with ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He also has appeared in Broadway musicals such as Les Misérables and The Lion King.
Jenkins has received a number of distinctions for his work, including the Faculty Champion Award from Oberlin College, the MLK Jr. Community Service in the Arts Award from The Cleveland Orchestra, and the Irene Chayes "New Voices" Award from the American Society for Aesthetics.
His arrival at Lawrence University coincides with the Conservatory's 150th anniversary year.
"We are delighted to welcome Chris to Lawrence," said Peter Blitstein, Provost and Dean of Faculty. "Chris is deeply qualified to lead the Conservatory. His vision and expertise will enrich the experiences of our students, faculty, and the broader community."
"It’s clear that the Lawrence Conservatory is a very special place, not just because of the strength of its values, but also because it combines innovative degree programs with world-class instruction," Jenkins said. "I believe that everyone should know about Lawrence, and I look forward to working with students, faculty, and staff in continuing to expand awareness of the impactful and inspired work happening on campus and in the community."
"I am truly honored to be joining Lawrence during such a significant milestone year. The next chapter for the Conservatory is filled with promise, and I’m excited to contribute to its continued success."
