Librettist Mark Campbell Wins Lifetime Achievement Award of the National Opera Association

The librettist and lyricist will be celebrated for his significant contribution to the operatic world

 

The National Opera Association (NOA) will bestow its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on the librettist and lyricist Mark Campbell at its upcoming conference in Phoenix, January 3-6.

Recipients of the prize are selected by NOA's Board of Directors, and have achieved a substantial international operatic career.

Campbell's libretti are some of the most successful in the contemporary canon. He is the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize in Music for his opera Silent Night, and in 2018 he garnered the GRAMMY Award for Best Opera Recording, for The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs.

Throughout his career, Campbell has written the libretti for 40 different operas, as well as lyrics for 7 musicals, and the text for 9 song cycles and 4 oratorios.

Campbell has received several other awards, including the first Kleban Foundation Award for a Lyricist, three GRAMMY nominations for Best Classical Recording, two Richard Rodgers Awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, three Drama Desk nominations, a Jonathan Larson Foundation Award, a New York Foundation for the Arts Playwriting Fellowship, the first Dominic J. Pelliciotti Award, and a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts.  

In addition, he is the creator and funder of the Campbell Opera Librettist Prize, the first award for opera librettists in the history of the art form. Campbell also co-created the True Voice Award for transgender singers.
