London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Appoints Co-Principal Violist
The Chinese violist Wenhan Jiang has now officially joined the orchestra
In his new position, Wenhan Jiang will be joining the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) in upcoming season performances including at the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall.
Jiang also serves as Section Leader Viola of Sinfonia Viva. Previously, he was Principal Viola of the Ulster Orchestra and Guest Principal Viola with orchestras around the UK and China.
A graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, he has won awards including First Prize in the Theodore Holland Viola Competition and Third Prize in the Oskar Nedbal Viola Competition.
He has also premiered works by contemporary composers including Harrison Birtwistle, Piers Hellawell, Rebecca Saunders, and more.
As a soloist, he has performed with the Manson Ensemble and the Ulster Orchestra. Additionally, Jiang is a champion of historical performance and actively promotes the five-string Violoncello da Spalla.
Jiang currently performs on a viola crafted by the Italian luthier Daniela Gaidano.
