Los Angeles Philharmonic Cancels Concert Due to Curfew in Downtown LA

LA's Mayor Karen Bass has implemented a curfew after days of protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies

The LA Philharmonic announced that the Seoul Chamber Music concert, scheduled at Walt Disney Concert Hall on June 10, was canceled due to the curfew in downtown Los Angeles.

The concert would have featured the Novus String Quartet and rising stars from South Korea, and was part of the larger Seoul Festival, highlighting South Korea’s impact on the American musical landscape.

The caption of LA Phil's social media post announcing the cancellation reads, "Stay safe, Los Angeles."

Many people in the comments of the post are urging a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11, presumably because of its historical implications; the composer dedicated the piece to the people who died or suffered during the Russian Revolution of 1905.

According to the New York Times, LA Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew for parts of downtown LA at a news conference on Tuesday evening.

The restrictions, running from 8 PM to 6 AM on Wednesday morning, were put in place to calm the multi-day protests against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids throughout the city.

California’s governor, Gavin Newson, condemned President Trump for a “brazen abuse of power” in sending military forces to the protests.

The LA Times reports that "a lawsuit brought by the state of California this week challenged President Trump’s decision to send in the National Guard.

"The suit, filed by Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta on behalf of California and Gov. Gavin Newsom, states that the Trump administration violated the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which spells out the limits of federal power."

Additionally, it has been reported that 700 Marines arrived in the Greater Los Angeles area on Tuesday, although Air Force Gen. Gregory Guillot said they do not have arrest power.
