Los Angeles Philharmonic Names Stucky and Tsao Fellow Composer Chairs for 2023/24
Bryan Chiu and Ethan Chaparro will each write a new work, with composer Andrew Norman acting as their mentor
The Los Angeles Philharmonic has named the two young composers who will hold its Stucky and Chao Fellow Chairs for the 2023/24 season. The two named chairs will act as an extension of the orchestra's Composer Fellowship Program, which sees high school students in grades 10-12 spend a year developing their compositional skills through workshops, concerts, and readings of new works.
Ethan Chaparro will hold the Tsao Fellow Chair, and as a result, he will work with Andrew Norman to compose a new piece for the YOLA Institute Symphony Orchestra. Bryan Chiu will hold the Stucky Fellow Chair, and will also work with Norman on a new piece on the theme of music and architecture — which will be premiered by the LA Phil as part of their Symphonies for Schools secondary program.
Currently a senior at Diamond Bar High School, Bryan Chiu is the principal horn of the Colburn Sinfonietta and has previously appeared with the Claremont Young Musicians' Orchestra and the Colburn Youth Orchestra. He has premiered a number of his own works, including a horn quartet.
16-year-old Ethan Chaparro is a junior at Long Beach Polytechnic High School. A brass player, he plays trombone in the top jazz band at his high school as well as the euphonium in its wind ensemble. Chaparro has also appeared in SCSBOA honor groups such as the Middle School Jazz All-Stars and the Middle School Symphonic Band. He aims to become a film composer.
"Join us in congratulating Bryan and Ethan on this exciting new adventure!" the orchestra wrote. "We look forward to their new compositions!"
