Manhattan School of Music Announces New Faculty Members
The school’s precollege division has welcomed four acclaimed musicians and educators for its 2023/24 academic year
The precollege program of the Manhattan School of Music (MSM) provides pre-conservatory training for exceptional musicians aged between five and 18. The program is held every Saturday throughout the school year and offers training in classical and jazz music.
Its new appointments include concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Benjamin Bowman; Met Opera first violinist Julia Choi; violin pedagogue Jungwon Yoon; and cellist Nicole Johnson, faculty member at New York’s Special Music School.
They will be involved with the program’s weekly private lessons, preparing students for recital performances, and in classes for theory, composition, orchestra, singing, and conducting.
Also a member of Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Bowman previously held the role of concertmaster of the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra. Choi has held the role of guest assistant concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Yoon’s students regularly go on to win competitions and perform in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and the Kaufman Music Center. Johnson has performed for over a decade with the internationally acclaimed Cassatt String Quartet.
