Legendary German-Bohemian music critic Eduard Hanslick died on this day in 1904.
Notoriously conservative, he was an outspoken opponent of the works of both Liszt and Wagner - and infamously, at its premiere, declared the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto put the audience "through hell" with music "which stinks to the ear".
