Musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra Finalize New Contract
The new 18-month contract will increase musicians' wages by 4% in the first year and 4% by year two
The musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) have now concluded their short strike period and reached an agreement with The Kennedy Center for their new 18-month labor agreement.
The new contract will increase wages by 4% in each of the two years, with negotiations for the next contract to commence in early 2026. In addition, players will receive expanded healthcare options (including a $1,000 discount on their employee contributions), paid parental leave, updates to the tenure and hiring processes, and the addition of a third music librarian.
After rejecting the first contract they were offered, the NSO's players went on strike for the first time since 1978. They picketed the outside of the Kennedy Center in matching red shirts between 11 AM and 2:30 PM, and management thought they might have to cancel the opening gala concert of the season as a result.
The NSO will retain their position as one of the best paid orchestras in the country, with the new contract bringing the base salary for musicians to $165,268 in year one and $171,879 in year two. The orchestra's management is satisfied with the sustainability of the 18-month contract, saying it is fiscally prudent.
"The musicians are very happy," said Edgardo Malaga Jr, the president of the players’ union. "We felt we were successful. We’ve got some good gains here that we can be proud of."
"The Kennedy Center and NSO board and leadership are satisfied that this agreement with the D.C. Federation of Musicians Local 161-710 reflects the world-class artistry of the musicians while recognizing the fiscal realities of the National Symphony Orchestra," The Kennedy Center wrote in a statement.
"Since becoming an affiliate organization of the Kennedy Center in 1986 — in an arrangement unique among American orchestras — the NSO has been an artistically vital part of the National Cultural Center. This agreement will ensure the future stability of both the NSO and Kennedy Center."
