National Youth Orchestra 2022 Members Announced

Launched in 2013 by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA) is a free program recognizing outstanding 16 to 19-year-old musicians from across the U.S.

The 2022 edition of the orchestra has selected 109 members following a comprehensive and highly selective audition process — 29 of whom had previously played with NYO-USA, plus several others who gained experience through NYO2, a program for younger players aged 14 to 17.

The orchestra will perform with conductor Daniel Harding and guest cellist Alisa Weilerstein this season at the annual Carnegie Hall concert on July 29, 2022, and as musical ambassadors on a European tour featuring works such as Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

This summer marks the first time the ensemble has been able to play at the hall and internationally, since 2019. Their 2022 tour of Europe will include performances in August at the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berlin’s Young Euro Classic festival, and a debut at the Lucerne Festival

To begin the season, NYO-USA musicians will arrive in New York in July for an intensive training residency on the campus of Purchase College, SUNY, working with principal players from different professional orchestras.

During the residency, James Ross, music director of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, will return to lead NYO-USA for the tenth year running, while Joseph Young, artistic director of ensembles at the Peabody Institute, will serve as resident conductor. They will run masterclasses, chamber music readings, and other seminars on essential music skills.

“The musicians who make up NYO-USA’s 2022 roster are among the very finest players in the nation,” said Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s executive and artistic director. “I’m sure that this will be an unforgettable summer for them – coming together to train with some of the top professional musicians in the country and performing at the highest level.”

Tickets for NYO-USA’s Carnegie Hall concert will open general sales on April 12, 2022, and will be available here.
