New Double Bass Competition Announced in Memory of Massimo Giorgi
Italy is to host a new double bass competition in memory of bassist Massimo Giorgi. An international soloist who performed hundreds of concerts in some of the most prestigious settings, Giorgi passed away at the age of 67 in August 2020.
Following his death, many of Giorgi's students, colleagues, and friends gathered together to form the Massimo Giorgi Association, which is chaired by Giorgi's widow, Mariarita Pasqualucci. The competition is to be their flagship event for the promotion of Giorgi's legacy.
The competition will take place over the weekend of July 28 to 30, 2022, and will be hosted by Rome's Sante Cecilia Conservatory of Music. The competition extends its gratitude to Professor Roberto Giuliani, who offered the conservatory premises for the competition.
The competition is comprised of three different categories, with different repertoire to be announced for each. There will also be three commissioned works, sponsored by the Massimo Giorgi Association. The best performance of each work will receive a prize of €1,000.
Initial applications must be received by May 31, with the selection rounds taking place in June and the finals in July.
