New Chevalier de Saint-Georges Biopic Releases Trailer
This new biopic follows the life of the extraordinary Black French composer, Chevalier de Saint-Georges
On April 7, 2023, Searchlight Pictures is set to release the new film CHEVALIER, which documents the extraordinary life of composer and violinist Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.
Born around 1739 in the French colony of Guadeloupe, Saint-Georges was the son of a French former councilor and plantation owner and a Senegalese slave woman. As a young child, he was taken to France, where he trained as a swordsman and received music lessons from François-Joseph Gossec.
A contemporary of Mozart, Saint-Georges rose to the top of the musical world in France despite significant discrimination against him. His works have recently undergone a revival, and are being programmed increasingly by organizations throughout the country.
Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the film pairs the turbulence of Saint-Georges' story with the unrest and instability of the period. It is thought that the Revolution is at least partially responsible for Saint-Georges' lack of public profile until the last few decades.
