New York Classic Violin Competition Announces Winners

Violinists Xiao Wang and Karisa Chiu have won first and second prizes, respectively, in addition to an invitation to the Grand Finale in 2025

 

The latest preselection contest leading up to the inaugural Classic Violin Olympus International Competition has come to a close.

At the New York Classic Violin Competition, violinist Xiao Wang has won First Prize and €20,000, Karisa Chiu received Second Prize and €10,000, and Dindin Jingyi Wang got Third Prize and €5,000.

In addition to their monetary awards, Wang and Chiu shall also win eligibility to participate in the invite-only Classic Violin Olympus International Competition, which will be held in Dubai in April 2025, with all expenses paid.

Hosted at Manhattan School of Music from May 27 to 31, this contest marks the third out of six entries in the series of preliminary events leading up to the Classic Violin Olympus International Competition Grand Finale from April 22-28, 2025.

A total of 20 violinists took to the stage in front of Chairman of the Jury Pavel Vernikov (Switzerland), who was accompanied by jurors Fumiaki Miura (Japan), Lucie Robert (Canada/USA), Livia Sellin (Austria/Germany), and Barry Shiffman (Canada).

 

First-prize winner of the 2012 Szigeti International Violin Competition and 2016 New York Concert Artist, violinist Xiao Wang has received numerous prizes and awards from international competitions, including the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Competition and the 2015 Seoul International Competition.

As a soloist, he performed at Bela Bartok National Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, Gewandhaus, Kammermusiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonic, National Center for Performing Art in Beijing, and Seoul Art Center. He worked under the baton of Marin Alsop, David Gilbert, János Kovács, George Manahan, and András Ligeti, and performed with orchestras including the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Academisches Orchester.

Xiao Wang began his violin studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing with Weidong Tong and later studied with Joseph Silverstein at the Curtis Institute of Music. He received his B.M., M.M., and Artist Diploma from the Manhattan School of Music under the guidance of Lucie Robert. He is currently on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music.
