New York Philharmonic Announces Live-to-Film Presentations
For its “The Art of the Score” series, the NY Phil will play alongside films including “Black Panther” and “E.T.” beginning in September 2023 through to May 2024
The New York Philharmonic inaugurated The Art of the Score series in 2013 to highlight music throughout film history. Its first iteration included the complete score of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey performed live to film.
Marking the 10th anniversary of the series, the 2023/24 season’s The Art of the Score comprises six films spanning a variety of genres, including German Expressionism, suspense, the movie musical, urban drama, and action-adventure.
Five of the six presentations will see the soundtracks being performed alongside the film for the first time in New York City. All performances will take place in the Wu Tsai Theater at David Geffen Hall.
On September 12, 13, 14 and 17, 2023, David Newman will conduct the NY Phil in Leonard Bernstein’s score to the 2021 version of West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg (of which the music was arranged by Newman).
Also featured on the GRAMMY-nominated soundtrack to the film, NY Phil will be performing West Side Story’s score for the first time since its recording sessions in January 2020.
From December 20–23, 2023, Anthony Parnther will make his NY Phil debut conducting Ludwig Göransson’s Oscar-winning score to Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler. Also featured on the original soundtrack (OST), tama player Massamba Diop will perform as a soloist in his NY Phil debut.
Norman Huynh will conduct Bernard Herrmann’s score to Vertigo, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, from January 23–26, 2024; and on January 28, 2024, performances will focus on Terence Blanchard’s film scores for Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, BlacKkKlansman, and Da 5 Bloods, featuring Blanchard on trumpet with his quintet the E-Collective.
On February 6, 2024, Cameron Carpenter will perform his original score for solo organ to the silent film Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang. This performance will feature the new Ronnie and Lawrence Ackman Digital Organ of David Geffen Hall.
Conducted by Constantine Kitsopoulos NY Phil will perform John Williams’s Oscar-winning score to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial from May 17–19, 2024. The orchestra last performed this program live to film in 2017.
