New York Philharmonic Names Matías Tarnopolsky as Next President and CEO

Tarnopolsky is currently the president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts

The New York Philharmonic has just announced that Matías Tarnopolsky will take on the role of its next President and CEO on January 1, 2025.

Tarnopolsky will return to the organization, after serving as the Philharmonic’s Vice President of Artistic Planning from 2005 to 2009. In his new role, he will help set the stage for the arrival of Gustavo Dudamel, who will become Music and Artistic Director in September 2026. The pair previously worked together in Chicago, New York, and Berkeley.

"Matías combines a deeply felt love of music with an unwavering commitment to building the best possible future for our art form," Dudamel said. "With his leadership, I am confident that we will bring to life our extraordinary, shared vision for the New York Philharmonic...I have also discovered that he is someone who understands me innately, both as a musician and as a human. We have a special chemistry, and I know he is the perfect choice for this position."

In 2018, Tarnopolsky became the chief executive of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Throughout his tenure, he oversaw the merger with the Kimmel Center in 2021, the rededication of the home of The Philadelphia Orchestra as Marian Anderson Hall, and significant gains in fundraising. Previously, he led the University of California, Berkeley's Cal Performances — in addition to holding top artistic posts at the Chicago and BBC Symphony Orchestras.

Born in Buenos Aires and raised in London, he is a graduate of King’s College London. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Avery Fisher Artist Program, Advisory Council of the Tianjin Juilliard School, Pacific Harmony Foundation, Philadelphia Convention and Visitor’sBureau, Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia, and Viñoly Foundation.

Tarnopolsky's work has been honored with the Chevalier de l’Ordre desArts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and the William J. Clothier II Award from the Pan American Association of Philadelphia.

“Matías Tarnopolsky is a singular figure among orchestral leaders,” said NY Phil Co-Chairmen Peter W. May and Oscar L. Tang of the announcement. “Building on his lifelong love for our art form, he has forged impactful collaborations with orchestral musicians and dynamic artistic leaders. He is also a force for innovation who has created new ways of connecting with communities and tapping into emerging technologies.”
