The Juilliard School Launches “The New Series”

The interdisciplinary series will feature Juilliard’s music, dance, and drama students in performances beginning on January 19, 2023

For its inaugural and collaborative program titled "The New Series," The Juilliard School will hold four to six ticketed and free interdisciplinary concerts each academic year, where current Juilliard students will be featured alongside alumni and guest artists. The first four performances will be held on January 19, February 6, March 30, and April 13, 2023.

Composer David Serkin Ludwig leads the program as the series’ artistic director and creator, and also serves as the dean and director of Juilliard’s Music Division. "The New Series" aims to build on the school’s commitment to contemporary music and foster partnerships between faculties.

“The New Series represents the best of what Juilliard has to offer, through collaborations that include performing artists from multiple disciplines presented at the highest level,” David said. “As we invest creatively in the music of our time, we have the opportunity to explore new and expansive ideas in a variety of formats. Through these explorations, we as a community nourish our passion for this art form by keeping both our excitement about and reverence for it alive.”

In its debut on January 19, 2023, the series will kick off with Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat and Wynton MarsalisA Fiddler’s Tale — based on Stravinsky’s work. On February 6, 2023, the series will present Terry Riley’s In C, which will also feature students from both Juilliard’s New York and Tianjin, China, campuses.

On March 30, 2023, the program will include chamber works by alumna Reena Esmail. Composing in styles that span Hindustani and American classical music, Esmail and her work is celebrated in this concert, which is also offered in collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s season-long study of women’s contributions to music.

The series’ first season will conclude on April 13, 2023, featuring the class of Juilliard composition faculty member Amy Beth Kirsten in original and experimental student works that incorporate movement, voice, and multimedia.

Each concert of the series will include a pre- and post-concert talk, as well as Q&A sessions with Ludwig and collaborating guest artists. For more information and the season calendar, click here.
