Operatic Singer Johannes Pietsch Wins Eurovision Song Contest
The countertenor was crowned following his performance of the song "Wasted Love"
The Austrian countertenor Johannes Pietsch, also known by his stage name of JJ, has been named the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. This year's edition was hosted by Switzerland and took place at the St Jakobshalle in Basel.
Pietsch won the competition following his performance of the operatic ballad Wasted Love. He received a combined points tally of 436, with both the vote of the public and that of the judges contributing to the score.
Second place was given to Yuval Raphael for her performance of the Israeli broadcaster Kan’s song New Day Will Rise, while third place went to Tommy Cash for Estonian broadcaster ERR, who performed a song titled Espresso Macchiato.
Born in 2001 in Vienna, Pietsch is Austrian-Filipino and spent most of his childhood in Dubai before returning to his home country. He is currently studying singing at the Music and Art Private University of Vienna (MUK).
He also sings in the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera and has participated in numerous productions, including Die Zauberflöte, Von der Liebe Tod, and Tschick.
Pietsch has appeared on a number of TV talent shows, including The Voice UK and the Austrian show Starmania, where he reached the finals.
He is the first person of Asian descent to win the Eurovision Song Contest, and the first Austrian to win the contest since 2014.
