OUT NOW | Anne-Sophie Mutter and VC Artist Pablo Ferrández’s Joint Album
Released on Sony Classical, the duo performs with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Manfred Honeck, and pianist Lambert Orkis
German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has recorded her first album with protégé and VC Artist cellist Pablo Ferrández. In 2018, Pablo became a scholarship holder in Mutter’s foundation and was in “Mutter’s Virtuosi,” a program supporting emerging artists. He is currently a Sony Classical artist.
Their new album comprises Brahms’s Double Concerto Op. 102, recorded live with the Czech Philharmonic and conductor Manfred Honeck in Prague in January 2022.
The album also includes Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio, which was a studio recording made in September 2021 with pianist Lambert Orkis, who has collaborated with Mutter for over 30 years. Written in 1846, Clara’s piano trio has long been neglected — this album marks the first time this work has been recorded by a major artist.
“We live in times where we have to realize that our repertoire needs to become much more diverse,” Mutter said. “So that’s another strong reason why we want to put Clara Schumann’s trio in the forefront. It seemed totally organic to couple it with Johannes Brahms, because their human and artistic relationship is simply inspirational.”
Since his prize-winning performances at the 15th International Tchaikovsky Competition, Paulo International Cello Competition, and his involvement in Mutter’s foundation, Pablo has become an award-winning soloist and performed across the world in prestigious venues.
“I met Miss Mutter nine years ago…and playing the Brahms Double [with her] was something I could never have ever dreamed of…when [she] asked me to play [it] with her in Madrid, which is my hometown, it was the biggest deal in the world for me,” Pablo expressed.
“I’m inspired, having such a musical conversation with Pablo,” Mutter added. “I wish him all the happiness and curiosity life can shower him with…I can see a wonderful future in front of him.”
