OUT NOW | Arnold Steinhardt and Seymour Lipkin's "Weber: Six Violin Sonatas"
Biddulph Recordings have released a new disc that presents historical recordings of the six violin sonatas of Carl Maria von Weber performed by violinist Arnold Steinhardt and pianist Seymour Lipkin.
Biddulph Recordings is a British label that specializes in the restoration of historical performances. Violinist and founder Peter Biddulph works in close collaboration with musicologist Eric Wen, who is an expert in historical performance practice for string instruments. Together, the pair have restored a number of important recordings made by historical violinists, including those by Fritz Kreisler, Joseph Szigeti, and Yehudi Menuhin.
Their newest project, "Weber: Six Violin Sonatas," is available here.
Violinist Arnold Steinhardt spent most of his career as the first violinist of the Guarneri String Quartet, which was founded in 1964 and continued working until the close of the 2009 season. He is also the author of several books, most prominently "Indivisible by Four," a memoir about life with the quartet.
Pianist Seymour Lipkin was born in Detroit in 1927 and died in 2015. He broke into the industry early, accompanying violinist Jascha Heifetz on a tour of Europe while he was still only seventeen years old. He also won the 1948 Rachmaninoff Piano Contest, despite one of his rivals being pianist Gary Graffman. For a time, Lipkin also worked as a conductor and served as the Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
