Deutsche Grammophon has this month announced the release of superstar violinist Maxim Vengerov's new album: Gateways.
Recorded with Chinese conductor Long Yu and the Shanghai Symphony, the disc features Chinese-born French composer Qigang Chen's (b. 1951) newly composed The Joy of Suffering and Wu Xing - coupled with Kreisler's Tambourin Chinois and Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances.
''Qigang Chen’s Joy of Suffering composed for violin and orchestra is a truly remarkable and exceptional musical statement of the 21st Century ... Chen’s own unique language of musical expression defines and connects the two finest French and Chinese traditions ..." Maxim has this week told The Violin Channel.
"The imaginative orchestral score and its sophisticated violin solo line challenges both the soloist and the orchestra ... and at the same time seeks harmony with one another ..." he has said.
"Violinists of our generation are blessed to have another unique work added to our repertoire for generations to come."
