Vienna Philharmonic's New Album, "2024 New Year's Concert"

Released on Sony Classical, the album celebrates the new year with works from the world of the waltz and polka

The Vienna Philharmonic, under the baton of Christian Thielemann, has released its 2024 New Year's Concert album. The album includes live recordings of nine works from this years New Year's event.

Thielemann, the principal conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle and Daniel Barenboim’s successor at the Berlin State Opera, led the Vienna Philharmonic through works by Karl Komzák, Johann Strauss II, Josef Hellmesberger, Eduard Strauss, Carl Michael Ziehrer, Anton Bruckner, Hans Christian Lumbye, and Josef Strauss.

A yearly event, the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year Concerts continue to be a popular event worldwide, with the performance being broadcast in over 90 countries and viewed on television by millions.

Thielemann maintains a close artistic partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic, based at the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. Following a recording of the complete Beethoven Symphonies, Thielemann and the Vienna Philharmonic embarked on a project during the pandemic to record the complete Bruckner Symphonies for the 2024 Bruckner Anniversary Year. Together, they recorded a cycle of all 11 Bruckner symphonies, a first in Philharmonic recording history, which was released in Autumn 2023.

"He is one of the orchestra’s conductors with whom we feel a special affinity. This is the reason why we have again invited him to conduct our New Year’s Concert on January 1st, 2024.”

The Vienna Philharmonic, founded in 1842, recently completed its USA tour with conductor Franz Welser-Möst, featuring a different program for each evening's performance. Their upcoming 2024 season presents works by Maurice Ravel, Anton Bruckner, Johannes Brahms, and more back in Austria.
