Pacifica Quartet Returns to Residency at the University of Chicago
The ensemble was first appointed to the residency in 2013, and will take it up again in the 2023/24 season
The Pacifica Quartet has once again been named as the Don Michael Randal (DMR) Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Chicago. The residency, which is for the 2023/24 season, celebrates a decade since the group was appointed as the inaugural DMR recipients in 2013.
The residency will see the quartet spend a week on the university's campus three times across the season, during which time they will present public concerts, participate in interdisciplinary panels, lead workshops with ensembles from the Department of Music, and be involved with the city's wider school and community music programs.
The quartet's first weeklong visit takes place in Fall 2023, and will include a performance of Sean Shepherd’s String Quartet No. 3 on October 19th. In addition, they will give a concert of works by Prokofiev, Beethoven, and Shepherd with UChicago Presents on Friday, October 20th.
The later residency weeks will feature works by Stephen Paulus, Gruenberg, Shostakovich, and Dvořák.
Comprising Simin Ganatra and Austin Hartman (violins), Mark Holloway (viola), and Brandon Vamos (cello), the Pacifica Quartet was formed in 1994. The group has been quartet-in-residence at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music for the past decade, leads the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival and School, and was previously the quartet-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
