Philadelphia’s "No Name Pops" Appoints New Music Director
Australian conductor Christopher Dragon will step into the role
The Australian conductor Christopher Dragon has been appointed as the new Music Director of the No Name Pops based in Philadelphia. He will step into the role by July 1, 2025 — by which time the organization's transformation from the Philly Pops will be complete.
No Name Pops was founded in 2023, after the Philly Pops — which had been running since the 1940s — was forced to close following an embezzlement scandal. Its former financial controller, Cheryl Lutts, embezzled more than $280,000 from the organization and was subsequently convicted.
Dragon is presently the Music Director of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, the newly appointed Music Director of the Greensboro Symphony, and the Resident Conductor of the Colorado Symphony.
Recently, Dragon made his debut with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center and his German debut with the WDR Funkhausorchester. He has also given performances of Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton with Danny Elfman reprising the role of Jack Skellington and historic performances with Nathaniel Rateliff at Walt Disney Concert Hall and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.
A past participant in the Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program in Australia under, Christopher Seaman, Dragon has also studied with conductors including Leonid Grin, Paavo and Neeme Järvi, Fabio Luisi, and Jorma Panula.
"Philadelphia is a city with an incredible passion for music, arts, and culture — much like its legendary love for sports and history," Dragon said.
"The energy and enthusiasm of the community is inspiring, and I can’t wait to bring that same excitement to the concert hall."
"Known for his vibrant performances, Dragon’s infectious enthusiasm on the podium has earned him recognition as one of the most exciting young conductors on the global stage," said a spokesperson for No Name Pops spokesperson. "His commitment to making orchestral music thrilling and accessible aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver unforgettable experiences that captivate and energize our audiences. We’re honored to be sharing this milestone with someone as talented and passionate as Chris."
