Pianist Marc-André Hamelin's New Album, "Hammerklavier: Piano Sonatas Op. 106, and Op. 2 No. 3"
Released on Hyperion Records, the album features two of Beethoven's piano sonatas that show the composer's evolution of style
Pianist Marc-André Hamelin has released his newest album on Hyperion Records, featuring Beethoven's monumental Hammerklavier Piano Sonata Op. 106 and his earlier Piano Sonata Op. 2 No. 3.
Completed in 1817, the Hammerklavier Sonata stands as one of Beethoven's most complex works, known for its technical demands and profound emotional landscape. The Hammerklavier's nickname, derived from the German word for "hammer keyboard," reflects the sonata’s demanding nature. The work is notable for its expansive structure, consisting of four movements that explore a wide range of emotions, from tumultuous intensity to serene introspection. The Hammerklavier also stands out for its innovative use of counterpoint and complex harmonic language, reflecting Beethoven's mature style.
In contrast, his Op. 2 No. 3 was composed in 1795, sharing a glimpse into the early stages of Beethoven's career. This work, part of a set dedicated to Joseph Haydn, is characterized by its playful spirit and lyrical beauty. The sonata consists of three movements, each showcasing Beethoven’s developing talent and creativity.
The juxtaposition of the two sonatas highlights the evolution of Beethoven's style.
