Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Appoints New Assistant Concertmaster
The position has been filled by the Ukrainian violinist Marta Krechkovsky, who first joined the PSO in 2014
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and Music Director Manfred Honeck have appointed PSO first violinist Marta Kretchkovsky as Assistant Concertmaster (fourth chair).
She will succeed Justine Campagna, and will continue her role as violinist of the Grand Teton Music Festival.
Hailing from Ukraine, Krechkovsky is a graduate of The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music studying with Glenn Dicterow and Lisa Kim. Previously, she attended the Young Artists Performance Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she studied with Atis Bankas.
Since then, she has appeared solo with numerous Ukrainian orchestras, as well as the PSO, Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, and Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra.
In chamber music, her collaborators have included Yo-Yo Ma, Julian Rachlin, St. Lawrence String Quartet, Joshua Bell, Augustin Hadelich, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Benjamin Grosvenor, and Pablo Sáinz-Villegas.
Additionally, Krechkovsky is a member of the Clarion Quartet, which comprises PSO musicians. The group’s debut album, “Breaking the Silence,” was released in 2018 on the TYE/Naxos label.
“[We are] excited to announce Marta Krechkovsky as our newly appointed Assistant Concertmaster!” the PSO posted on Facebook. “A major congratulations to Marta and we look forward to many more seasons with her as a part of the PSO!”
Now in its 129th season, the GRAMMY Award-winning PSO has been led by Honeck since 2008. Past music directors have included Fritz Reiner, William Steinberg, André Previn, Lorin Maazel, and Mariss Jansons. Notably, the orchestra began touring in 1896, and its recordings and live radio broadcasts date back to the 1930s.
