Prizewinners Announced at the 2022 Bottesini Double Bass Competition

29-year-old Juliàn Medina of Argentina received the grand prize

The 2022 edition of the Bottesini Double Bass Competition, which is held in Crema, Italy on a biennial basis, has recently come to a close.

The three finalists were Juliàn Medina (29, Argentina), Hyunju Kim (25, South Korea), and Fabrizio Buzzi (21, Italy). They each performed concerti alongside the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, which was led by conductor Damian Iorio.

Juliàn Medina was crowned the winner. As part of his prize, he will receive a double bass by Marco Nolli to the value of €30,000. The instrument is a copy of the bass by Testore that Bottesini himself played.

Fabrizio Buzzi took home second prize (a combined total of €9,000 from different donors), while third prize (€3,000 and a bow by the maker Marco Pasquino) went to Hyunju Kim.

The jury was comprised of Franco Petracchi, Thomas Martin, Tim Cobb, Fora Baltacigil, Enrico Fagone, Zsolt Fejervari, and chaired by the renowned violist Bruno Giuranna.
