Prizewinners Announced at the International Johannes Brahms Competition
Jana Jakovljevic won the violin category, while Yo Kitamura took out the cello category and Uram Kim the piano category
The 29th edition of the International Johannes Brahms Competition, which is held each year in Pörtschach, Austria, has recently come to a close. In 2023, the competition catered to violinists, cellists, and pianists, with more than 400 musicians from 40 nations applying.
The format is slightly different to that of most other competitions, with jurors giving their marks immediately following each performance, while the audience is still present. Through this mechanism, the competition aims to keep the judging process as open and transparent as possible.
The final results of the 2023 competition are as follows:
Violin:
1st place: Jana Jakovljevic
2nd place: Emrik Revermann
3rd place: Yue-Xin Pei
Cello:
1st place: Yo Kitamura
2nd place: Arne Zeller
3rd place: Theresa Laun
Piano:
1st place: Uram Kim
2nd place: Tetiana Donets
3rd place: Kohei Taruya
Special Prize
Yo Kitamura – Cello: special prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work by composer Johannes Kropfitsch.
The jury comprised Elisabeth Kropfitsch, Orfej Simic, Peter Schuhmayer, Kara Nam, Johann Ko, Catalin Ilea, Stefan Kropfitsch, Eva Nemeth, Balázs Kakuk, Ryo Meehae, Leontina Margulis, Johannes Kropfitsch, Paweł Kamasa, Yuki Miyagi, and Lehel Both.
"Yesterday's gala concert showed the big musical versatility of our prize winners, from folk pieces, to spiritual arrangements, and classic interpretations of Brahms and other composers," wrote the competition on social media.
"Congratulations to all, and also a big thanks to our jury members! We hope you enjoyed your time in Pörtschach and Velden. Until next year!"
