Rhode Island's Brown University to Open New Concert Hall
The first public performance at The Lindemann Performing Arts Center is scheduled on October 21, 2023
Following four years of planning and construction, Brown University will open the Lindemann Performing Arts Center for student use in September.
The center is named in honor of Brown trustee and benefactor Frayda B. Lindemann — former chair of the Metropolitan Opera and funder of its Young Artist Development Program.
The Lindemann Performing Arts Center includes one main level and three underground floors — with one major hall as well as several practice rooms and rehearsal spaces.
On the main floor, adjacent to the lobby, the space will be able to transform into multiple configurations: intimate recital space, an end-stage arrangement typically used for theatrical performances, and a seatless 40-by-40-foot cube. For larger productions, the space can accommodate a stage that fits an orchestra of 100, auditorium seating for 530, and additional seating in wrap-around balcony levels.
"With a radical, one-of-a-kind approach to spatial, acoustic and technical flexibility, Brown University’s 101,000-square-foot Lindemann Performing Arts Center, designed by Joshua Ramus/REX, will inspire dynamic art-making, enable new forms of artistic collaboration and serve as a hub for performance at Brown," reads its website.
