Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra’s Concertmaster to Step Down
Following his trial period, Tjeerd Top has opted to return to his previous role as associate concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra
The Dutch violinist Tjeerd Top has chosen not to continue as concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (RPhO), where he was appointed in January 2025.
At the end of Top’s trial period in the role, the RPhO said it would have liked to continue its collaboration with him. However, Top explained that he will be returning to his previous position as deputy concertmaster at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
He says his decision was motivated by loyalty and connection to his Amsterdam colleagues at the Concertgebouworkest, where has played since 2005, and was appointed deputy concertmaster in 2012.
“It has been a privilege to be part of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra these past months,” Top expressed. “I have been welcomed with open arms and have enjoyed working with the musicians and the team.
“I have come to know the RPhO as a fantastically good, open and energetic orchestra. At the same time, I gradually noticed how strong my connection with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and my colleagues there is,” he continued. “Sometimes you only know what you are missing when you no longer have it (temporarily). Based on that loyalty, I have decided to return to my familiar place.”
“We would have liked to keep Tjeerd with us longer,” said RPhO General Manager Rob Streevelaar. “His musicality, personality and energy are infectious and the interaction with him is great. Of course we respect his choice and wish him all the best.”
The RPhO’s new search process to fill the role of concertmaster will begin soon.
