Spain's Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra Appoints New Principal Conductor
Oboist and conductor Lucas Macías will step into the role for an initial three-year term
The Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla (ROSS), in Spain, has announced that Lucas Macías will serve as the orchestra's next Principal Conductor. He has been appointed for an initial term of three seasons, with the capacity to extend the contract for a further two seasons afterward.
Macías came to conducting following a distinguished career as an oboist. Previously, he played in the world's top orchestras, holding positions as Principal Oboe of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra — before making his conducting debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 2014.
Since that time, he has led ensembles including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orchestre de Paris (where he was assistant conductor for two years in close collaboration with Daniel Harding), Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, Staatskapelle Dresden, Filarmónica de Buenos Aires, Het Gelders Orkest, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia and the Euskadiko Orkestra, among others.
Macías has been principal conductor of the Oviedo Filarmonía since 2018 and artistic director of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada since 2020.
A past student of Heinz Holliger and Maurice Bourgue, Macías trained as a conductor with Mark Stringer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
According to ROSS's Managing Director, Macías was selected for "his excellent artistic merit, his rising professional trajectory as a conductor" and "his ability to lead symphonic projects and connect them with the society in which they operate."
