Spain’s Orquestra Sinfònica de Barcelona Announces Principal Guest Conductor

Marta Gardolińska’s two-year appointment with Orquestra Sinfònica de Barcelona (OBC) will see her conduct at least three weeks of performances every concert season.

Gardolińska made her debut with OBC last April conducting Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with singers tenor Ian Bostridge and soprano Dorothea Röschmann

“I am very much looking forward to my musical journey with the wonderful musicians,” said Gardolińska in a statement. “From the very first rehearsal I had with the orchestra I felt a very special atmosphere of focus, generous music-making and communication and I am sure that it will allow us to create many special musical moments together in the two coming seasons of my position as the principal guest conductor.

“One of the things that I most appreciate about this opportunity is an open and inventive approach to curating programs that I share with the OBC programming team,” she continued. “It allows me to make some bold repertoire choices, bring some music from my native Poland, but also get to know the output of some Catalan composers. All of these exciting projects are enhanced by the prospect of spending some more time and sharing music with the people of Barcelona, which is one of my favorite cities!”

Gardolińska came to worldwide attention as Young Conductor in Association at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra between 2018 and 2020. The 2019-20 season also saw her acclaimed North American debut as a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

This season will see Gardolińska make several debuts both in Europe and the UK, including with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and make an appearance with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Her upcoming projects include conducting subscription concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio and leading a production of Messager’s Fortunio at Opera national de Lorraine, where she was recently appointed music director.
