The director passed away suddenly following complications from an e-scooter accident
The New York-based stage director Dennis Whitehead Darling has passed away, following an e-scooter accident in the city.
A graduate of Texas State University and the University of Memphis, Whitehead Darling held fellowships at Opera Memphis and English National Opera (ENO).
His directing credits included several world premiere performances, including Paul Moravec/Mark Campbell’s GRAMMY-nominated oratorio Sanctuary Road (North Carolina Opera), The Secret River (Opera Orlando), and Marian’s Song (Houston Grand Opera). He also recently directed Die Zauberflöte (Pensacola Opera), La Bohème (Opera Columbus), Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Carnegie Mellon University), and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (Red Mountain Theatre).
Whitehead Darling was a strong advocate for productions centering on African Americans, people of color, or any marginalized group of people. He described his ultimate goal as "to use [his] artistic voice to tell passionate and emotionally moving stories that invite, encourage and inspire audiences to feel and discover a new social or political perspective."
Our condolences to Whitehead Darling's family, friends, and colleagues.
"New Orleans Opera mourns the sudden passing of Dennis Whitehead Darling, Director, in New York," wrote New Orleans Opera in a statement. "Dennis made his New Orleans directing debut in December 2024, directing our immersive production of Campbell-Okpebholo’s opera The Cook-Off, at The Southern Food & Beverage Museum. True to form, his insight, craft and wit created a joyful show and a wonderful experience for all involved. Our thoughts are with his husband, colleagues, many friends and family."
"In La bohème at 400 West Rich and María de Buenos Aires, Dennis brought a breathtaking intimacy and modern urgency that captivated audiences and reminded us of the raw power of opera to reflect real life," wrote Opera Columbus.
