Stockholm’s Royal Swedish Opera Appoints New Conductor in Residence
The German-Brazilian conductor and répétiteur André Callegaro will assume the role from October 1, 2025
As the Royal Swedish Opera’s new conductor in residence, André Callegaro will be working closely with Music Director Alan Gilbert and all guest conductors.
In a comprehensive audition process, Callegaro was selected from a pool of 250 applicants from over 30 countries.
Currently the Kapellmeister and Studienleiter at Germany’s Theater Aachen, Callegaro has previously served the same roles at the Mainfrankentheater Würzburg, plus been assistant and répétiteur at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.
As a member of the Jette Parker Artists Program at the Royal Ballet and Opera, he has collaborated with conductors Sir Antonio Pappano, Antonello Manacorda, Nicola Luisotti, Mark Wigglesworth, and more.
Callegaro studied orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and is a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Verband Bayreuth.
In the upcoming season at the Royal Swedish Opera, he will lead the ballet double bill Lifar/Forsythe, as well as several concerts with the Royal Swedish Orchestra for its 500-year jubilee in 2026.
“I am very much looking forward to working together with André,” said Gilbert. “His performance at the auditions was on a very high level and I am convinced that his presence will be a notable benefit for everyone involved in the musical processes at the Royal Swedish Opera.”
