Three years after the theft of a rare 1710 Amati violin from a residence in Los Angeles, the FBI is expanding efforts to find it
After a rare 1710 Amati violin was stolen from art dealer’s home in Los Angeles, the FBI is now asking for the public's help in its recovery mission.
The over 300-year-old violin belongs to Rowland Weinstein, who lives in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. He would allow his musician friends and professional violinists to play the instrument, which was stolen from his white Tesla, parked outside his Los Feliz home on December 8, 2020.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the instrument was in excellent condition and sold for just over half a million dollars in 2013 by the Tarisio auction house. Today, it would likely be worth more than $700,000.
The FBI website reads:
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Los Angeles Field Office's Art Crime Team in California is seeking the public's assistance with information regarding the theft of a 1710 Amati violin from a residence in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles on December 8, 2020."
