Tenor Juan del Bosco has Died, Aged 41
The prize-winning Mexican tenor was the founder of the International Summer Opera Festival of Morelia
The Mexican tenor Juan del Bosco has passed away, aged just 41.
Bosco made his debut at Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater in 2016, and he appeared in venues including the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico City) and Lincoln Center. He also gave performances in a more public-facing capacity, for media outlets and royalty — and he sang the Mexican National Anthem at the Davis Cup tennis tournament.
Bosco was the recipient of the José Mojica Price for the best tenor at the Concurso San Miguel, one of the most highly-regarded music competitions in Latin America.
His roles included the title role in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino, Riunuccio (Gianni Schicchi), King Artbano (La Dorichlea), The Duke (Rigoletto), Roméo (Roméo et Julieta), Faust (Faust), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Canio (I Pagliacci), and Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus).
In addition, Bosco was the Founder and President of the International Summer Opera Festival of Morelia, which has become the third largest festival of its kind in Mexico. The festival's central aim was to provide lessons, masterclasses, and public performance opportunities for Morelian singers who would not otherwise have access to these opportunities.
Bosco was also the founder of the organization Passion for the Opera, which supports young singers in the early development of their operatic careers.
Our condolences to Bosco's family, friends, and colleagues.
