The Academy of St Martin in the Fields Names New Chief Executive

The London-based Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) chamber orchestra recently appointed a new Chief Executive in Annie Lydford. She comes to the Academy from a role as Managing Director at Nevill Holt Opera, which she held for three seasons.

Lydford has also worked in communications for a number of prominent arts organizations, including the English National Opera and the Creative Industries Federation. She was also a founding board member of SWAP'ra, a charitable organization that advocates for women and parents working in the opera sector.

The ASMF was founded in 1958 by Sir Neville Marriner, with the goal of operating as a flexible, unconducted ensemble that facilitates a high level of player autonomy. Today, it is led by American violinist Joshua Bell, and the group frequently presents both chamber music and symphonic repertoire.

"The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is an orchestra I’ve loved for years through its iconic recordings and live concerts," said Lydford. "It is an honor to join a team that combines the Academy’s tremendous legacy with the continuously high musical standards of the orchestra today."

"I have enjoyed meeting and speaking with members of the orchestra and board over the last month, and am looking forward to working with Joshua, Tomo Keller, the players, the management team and the board to ensure that the Academy remains at the forefront of the world’s chamber orchestras," she added.

"As Music Director and proud member of the Academy’s musical family, I am delighted that Annie Lydford has accepted the position of Chief Executive and I am very much looking forward to working with her," said Joshua Bell.

"Under her guidance, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields will strive to be innovative and forward thinking, while continuing to honor the legacy of Sir Neville Marriner and live up to its reputation as one of the most exalted musical institutions in the world," he added.
