The Juilliard School Announces a Third New Addition to its Composition Faculty
Composer Kevin Puts will teach at the school as Distinguished Visiting Faculty
The Juilliard School recently announced that the renowned composer Kevin Puts will be teaching in its composition department as Distinguished Visiting Faculty during the 2024/25 academic year. He joins composers Valerie Coleman and Nina C. Young, who were announced as new permanent faculty appointments in February 2024.
Puts will work with composition students at Juilliard several times each semester in small group settings. He will also serve as guest artist and presenter in departmental classes and seminars, and provide additional professional mentorship opportunities to current composition students.
Known as one of America's best living composers, Puts's music has been commissioned and performed by the Metropolitan Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Opera Philadelphia, and Minnesota Opera, among others.
He is the winner of a Pulitzer prize for his 2012 opera Silent Night, as well as the GRAMMY award for best contemporary classical album, given for the Philadelphia Orchestra's recording of his work Letters for the Future. Puts currently teaches a composition studio at Peabody Conservatory.
"[Kevin Puts] has an extraordinary career as a composer and is a great model for our composition students who aspire to make a life in music," said David Serkin Ludwig, Dean and Director of the Music Division. "[We] are excited to welcome him into our community of artists and look forward to seeing the many ways he will positively impact creative work at Juilliard."
"We are thrilled to have these exceptional artists joining our community," said Adam Meyer, Juilliard’s Provost. "Each has led a distinguished musical career and will contribute to Juilliard’s artistic and educational core in very meaningful ways. We look forward to welcoming them to our faculty."
