The Maxwell Quartet Signs to Epstein Fox Performances
The group, which pairs standard classical fare with Scottish folk music, will be represented by Brooke Scholl and Michael Fox
The Maxwell Quartet has joined the roster of Epstein Fox Performances, an agency that was founded in 2022 as a merger of Epstein & Company and Fox Performances. The ensemble will be represented by the company's two classical division agents, Brooke Scholl and Michael Fox.
Comprising Colin Scobie and George Smith (violins), Elliot Perks (viola), and Duncan Strachan (cello), the Maxwell Quartet is equally well-honed in the classical repertoire and in Scottish folk repertoire. The group was formed at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2010, and its players were Residency Artists for Enterprise Music Scotland between 2011 and 2013.
The quartet has held residencies at Oxford University, Perth Concert Hall, and many chamber music festivals across the UK, including at their own festival Loch Shiel in the west highlands of Scotland, and a new self-curated concert series at Guardswell Farm in Perthshire. The ensemble currently holds the position of Associate Artist at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, and at Music at Paxton Festival in the Scottish Borders.
The quartet's first two releases on Linn Records paired string quartets by Haydn with the players’ own compositions, based on Scottish folk music — with the first disc reaching number three in the classical specialist charts.
In 2023 the quartet released released Gather, a recording that brought together traditional Scottish music ranging from 1200 to the present day: from ancient Celtic plainchant of the Inchcolm Antiphoner to fishermen’s songs, and from pipe marches from the Western Isles and Shetland Reels to new compositions.
